Green IO Newsletter - November 2025

Building a greener digital world, one byte at a time

Hello responsible technologist!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Green IO Paris! An exceptional line up - we say it every year, but its true!

Our collective Green IO community is growing, gaining strength, and this is shown by both the quality and the number of speakers (over 40) that are now joining us in Paris on this responsible tech adventure. And if you want to know how many different NGOs are joining the 2025 edition, read on to find out…

So as Gaël finalizes last minute preparations for this truly pan-European conference, this month’s curated content should whet the appetite - an amuse-bouche as we say here in France. And of course, we are really looking forward to seeing many of you in Paris in 10 days time. And for those that can’t be there in person, don’t worry, presentations and wrap-ups will follow. And there’s always next year …

What else has popped up on our Tech & Sustainability radar?

# Listen… We’re all ears

E3 of the AI Sustainability podcast checks out GreenPT and how it minimizes its C footprint though green hosting, whilst Alphalist E131 dives into AI product strategy. And Techswamp has a nice policy review 2025 wrap up, discussing regulation, innovation and the future of Small Tech.

# Watch… Sometimes video is worth its environmental footprint

Jumping on last month’s newsletter and the link to her blog on ethics, Sacha Luccioni delivers a nice TEDx explainer on why we need to focus on practical solutions to reduce AI carbon emissions, avoid infringing copyrights and stop spreading biased information.

# Read… Our coffee-break reading this month

There has been an awful lot of chatter in the media recently about whether the bubble is about to burst, and whether we are on the brink of an AI apocalypse. Much, too, has been written about whether Open AI is in fact in deep trouble, as investment overshoots revenue, and how multi-million dollar deals between key industry players could be fueling the hype.

Two neat articles on datacenters and resource use: ‘AI datacenters explained, and AI, datacenters and water (see also podcast #E62 with Masheika Allgood & #E36 with PS Lee).

Resilience & the importance of science - key science must-knows (2 page summary) to help decision-makers and anyone implementing systemic resilience. By addressing risk, climate action should surely follow (see also podcast #E60).

And what’s in a word? Read how tech is influencing language in 2025 and also our relationship with the world of work, and how fears of digital colonialism are on the rise 56 years on from Herbert Schiller.

And last, but not least, the resulting decision from COP30, plus an overview of key outcomes and disappointments from the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém.

# Tools… Skill-up for a sustainable future

The new EcoLogits release has seen a major improvement in its methodology for assessing the environmental footprint of Gen AI at inference, with the notable addition of water consumption as a new impact criterion.

And, to help benchmark web sustainability maturity, a prototype tool (in Miro) has also been released (thanks to James Chudley).

# Study… We’re never too old to learn

Output from the Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop 25122 (March 2025), computer scientists from around the globe have produced a manifesto called ‘Climate change: what is Computing’s responsibility’, outlining commitments and directions for future action. Kate Raworth & co. have produced a new report ‘The Evolving Doughnut’, a third iteration of the framework first published in 2012, aiming to inspire additional research and action, with its revised set of 35 indicators. And a new framework for integrating sustainability into Agile mindset and practices.

# Participate… One byte at a time

The Answer is Us is a campaign against the exploitation of territories & the current trajectory of a carbon intensive surveillance-based future. They have published their statement of solidarity (EN/PT) - if you want, you can sign it here.

Got some time on your hands, and looking to volunteer in the wider world of climate & tech? Look no further than the CAT slack community (join here and check out the onboarding checklist).

And a couple of calls for papers: ICT4S conference series & also DevopsSustain 2026.

# Attend… Meet fellow responsible technologists

Two last positive thoughts!

1) It’s fantastic to see so many different NGOs joining Green IO Paris this year, looking to network and search out European partners !

A short video introduction on The Earthshot Prize winner re.green, an organization that helps to restore Brazil’s lost rainforest. By using AI, drones and satellite imagery, combined with ecological and financial data, land with the biggest potential for restoration can be quickly identified.

See you next month!
