Across the globe, technology permeates our daily lives. From renewable energies, traffic management or communication systems, to 3D printed prosthetics or even finishing our homework. With this comes the realization that “tech” is radically changing our societies with a speed that has never been experienced before, with both positive and negative impacts.
Yet more and more people, from all walks of life, are happy to join the growing movement of designing and delivering responsible technology. Last month, 300+ responsible technologists made it to Green IO London, 2000+ have signed up for our newsletter, and we now have 3000+ followers on LinkedIn, and we are just one of many different and complementary groups or networks operating in this field. Sustainable IT & IT for Sustainability are gaining serious traction, no matter what the sector, as there is a growing recognition that we need to be both technologically and ecologically literate. Thanks to you all for your vote of confidence and continued support.

Olivier de Meringo attended the Green IT day(s) conference which took place in Montpellier and Toulouse (south of France) on October 2 and 3. Here’s his key takeways for Green IO’s readers:
This year's theme was "Digital and life, virus or vivus ?" It was a great opportunity to explore both the positive and negative impacts of digital on our ability to live on our small planet.
Compared to previous editions, we felt a revealing shift towards anti-greenwashing positions over the years, and many topics were related to AI adoption. Specifically, the talk given last year by David Maenda Kithoko, was cited multiple times. Its strong testimony of the socio-ecological impacts of mining in Central Africa left nobody indifferent.
There were numerous conferences, panels, and impromptu encounters, but some powerful key points include…

The Great Simplification E196 drills down to the nitty gritty of the US electrical grid system, and who really is responsible & accountable for providing dependable electricity, whilst CXO Bytes E13 gets the inside track from Cooper Elsworth on Google’s research covering the environmental impact of AI.
Environment Variables E122 concentrates on software architecture, sustainable AI, MLOps and the need for cross sector collaboration to embed sustainability as a core principle of software engineering. And a relaxed discussion about intelligent Stormcrawling and Green IT with Julien Nioche.
The EU launches its Apply AI strategy, which aims to strengthen industry, research and SMEs and “and marks another step towards making the EU an AI Continent”. Freedom of speech and independent media are hot topics, and TruthDig offers a platform for journalists to pursue stories even if they lead to some uncomfortable truths, such as whether AI can be just or not. Pushing a ‘learning companion’ approach, students in the Middle East, Africa & Europe get free access to Google Gemini (Google AI Pro), as the battle continues between the GAFAM giants to win over future clients. And it seems that the warning signs were not heeded back in June, when Robby Starbuck was appointed to prevent political bias, as the Meta AI advisor is now being criticized of spreading disinformation. Funny (well, not really) as he is now suing Google over ”outrageously false” AI-generated statements.
And, of course, it’s hard not to miss Microsoft pulling the plug on support for Windows 10 mid October -extended security updates are available (for a fee) until October 2026- though counter movements such as endof10.org have been active for quite some time. A nice wrap-up on the repercussions and potential solutions, in a world without support, is also available from Les Enovateurs (FR).
The Shift Project also released at the beginning of the month their final report on “AI, data and computing - what infrastructure is needed in a decarbonized world” (currently FR only but EN version to follow).
It’s fantastic too, to see so many members of the Green IO network in the spotlight these last few weeks, working hard to champion Green IT & sustainable tech across all fronts:
Sasha Luccioni’s blog digs deep on ethics, sustainability and responsible AI;
Will & Holly Alpine’s mission to expose the threat of enabled emissions (E47a & 47b) is echoed in the Wood Mackenzie report on how AI is boosting the oil industry;
Wilco Burggraaf (E68) dropped a great article on the financial impacts of unfenced AI;
Tristan Nitot (E50) and Boavizta teaming up to create a new tool (see # Tools section below);
And for all those fond of the language of lovers, Lou Welgryn and Théo Alves da Costa (E28) have written a great article (FR) about climate disinformation in French & Brazilian media.
SGA have launched a standard for gaming.
Tristan Nitot & the Boavizta community have been working hard to launch the EROOM quick diagnostic. No judgement, just a focus on identifying digital services with the greatest optimization potential.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published the Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSGs) as an official Draft Note. You can find the draft here and information about the release here.
And in a case of tech pitting against tech, for all you doomscrollers, the Undoomed app is for you!
A recent review explores why carbon offsets rarely work, citing systemic problems; and a new study on aligning digital futures with ecological citizenship for sustainability. And an infographic from Green IT’s latest study on AI’s global impacts (EN translation of full FR study coming soon).

“Metamorphoses” :- Lingnan Arts Biennale 2025 (Hong Kong) celebrates change as both a poetic force and a practical path toward renewal. It invites us to explore the evolving nature of humanity, creativity, and technology, believing that LAB 2025 is so much more than a festival — it’s a blueprint for the future.
